When God revealed Jesus Christ to us, God "began" that good work in us and when that happened God sealed us with HIS Spirit as a type of "earnest".
Eph. 1 ... In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
Often we attend a church, join a church, are baptized in water before we hear the word of truth from God by HIS Spirit. This hearing from God changes everything! Then we are given HIS Spirit. Before it is just our own works. But after God reveals HIMSELF to us everything changes.
Those of us who have had this experience really know the difference.
