righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.

If truth is in our hearts, then we are probably children of God. If truth rises up inside us to overcome the lies, we are probably children of God. The Spirit of God is the Spirit of truth.
The devil is a liar and Jesus says the devil does not abide in the truth because there is no truth in him.
Jn. 8 ... Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
If we live in truth, abide in truth setting aside lies when they come to us, then we are children of God, children of the truth.
If we set aside truth and live in lies and speak lies then we show we are children of the devil who is the father of lies. I know people who say they are of God but they live in lies and even speak lies. These people cannot be of God. People who are of God cling to the truth and continue in truth.
