Mt. 16 ... The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven.
When I read this, I remembered the devil asking Jesus to show a sign, to prove HE was from God.
Mt. 4 ... Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. 3And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
In Mt. 16, when the Pharisees and Sadducees asked Jesus to show them a sign from heaven, Jesus responded:
2 He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. 3And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? 4A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.
This reminds me of something that happened many years ago when I was a new Christian. A man told me he asked God to give him a sign if he should marry the woman he was dating. He asked God to have the next car blink it's lights if he should marry her. The lights of the next car blinked. He married this woman. She was a divorced woman.
Jesus said: Mt. 5:32 ... But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
- the man who divorces a faithful wife will cause her to commit adultery if she remarries.
- the faithful wife commits adultery if she remarries after divorce
- the man who marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.
