I Peter 4 ... 1 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; 2That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.
There are a great many things the flesh wants to do but because we now belong to God and have HIS Spirit we do not allow the flesh to do as it wants. We do not allow it to tell people off and put them in their place as we once did. We refuse to hate and despise people who have not the Spirit of God as we do for we know we did nothing to deserve having the Spirit of God it was simply the grace of God toward us. We practice charity instead of hatred. We put aside fornication and when we have to do so we flee fornication as did Joseph and the holy people before us.
All these things we now do go against the flesh and because we refuse to give in to the flesh and refuse to allow the flesh to do what it wants to do, we "suffer in the flesh" ...
Things the flesh wants to do are listed in Gal. 5 ... 19Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
NASB ... Gal. 5:19-21 ... immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you just as I have forewarned you that those who practice such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God
NIV ... Gal. 5:19-21 ...sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery, idolatry and witchcraft, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy, drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
After we are born again, and have the Spirit of God in us, we are no longer captive to our flesh as we once were. Now we identify with being crucified with Christ that we who are raised as a new creature, born again by the Spirit of God, can put the flesh to death and keep our flesh from taking over. We reckon that we are dead with Christ and alive now to God. We no longer let sin reign in our flesh as we once did. When the flesh tries to rise up, we refuse to allow it to have its way and we do whatever we have to do to keep it down.
Thus by refusing to allow the flesh to do as it wants to do, we cause the flesh to suffer and know what it means "to suffer in the flesh".
