Being disturbed without cause

Pam Padgett ... teacher

Psalm 39:6 Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them. 7 And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.

As I read surely they are disquieted in vain I thought of the many time I have been worried, anxious, or upset about things that really didn't matter, or things in which there was nothing I could do.  All of the turmoil resulted in nothing worthwhile or lasting.  We see this frequently in the world.  But being disquieted is opposite to being in peace, and we are to be diligent to be in peace.  So it is important that we deal with what is causing us to be disquieted, rather than trying to ignore the problem.

2 Peter 3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. 14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

disquieted:
- worried, anxious
- to be in great commotion or tumult
- to rage, war, moan, clamor
- to be in uproar
peace:
-
an undisturbed state of mind
- freedom from disagreement or quarrels
-
freedom from war; stopping war
- calm; quiet; tranquility
When we are disquieted, the problem may be caused by our trying to exalt ourselves or gain recognition in some way, putting pressure on ourselves and placing ourselves as adversaries to others.  Our flesh is always ready to rise up but, as Paul did, we need to bring our flesh under subjection, and seek to live in humbleness and obedience to God.  When we sincerely seek God's will, instead of our own will, we are calmed and no longer in strife.

1 Corinthians 9:26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: 27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

Disturbing thoughts brought by the devil cause us to be disquieted.  We need to present each of these thoughts to God and ask Him to give us His truth about the matter.  As we conform our thinking to the truth God gives to us, we can move forward in peace.

2 Corinthians 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

We may be worried about what may happen in the future, or tormented by something in the past.  We need to deal with those things we have before us at this point in time.

Philippians 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Matthew 6:34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Sometimes there is a matter in our path needing to be dealt with which causes us to be disquieted.  Rather than fretting ourselves and trying to figure out what to do on our own (Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?  Matthew 6:27), we can turn to God and ask Him to help us and show us what to do.  When we do this, we have the following assurance ...

Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
