Riches of world vs. riches of God

Pam Padgett ... teacher

Proverbs 15:16 Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble therewith.

Proverbs 15:17 Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.

Proverbs 17:1 Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.

Proverbs 21:9 It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house.

Proverbs 21:19 It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman.

Proverbs 28:6 Better is the poor that walketh in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich.

Ecclesiastes 4:6 Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.

As I read these verses, I thought of how riches of this world (such as possessions, reputation, and people) are appealing to our flesh.  But if we seek after these riches, we often put ourselves in the path of trouble, temptations, compromise, and travail.

In order to keep ourselves in peace and in a position to hear what God would speak to us and to do what is right in His sight, often requires us to choose less.  Rather than seeking more possession, we are to be content with what we have, trusting God to provide everything we need.  Rather than seeking to bring attention and glory to ourselves and to draw others to us, we are to seek to do what is pleasing to God, bringing glory to Him.

Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. 18 For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men. 19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.

Isaiah 55:2 Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.
