At the lake of Gennesaret Jesus sat in Simon's
boat and taught the people who were on the shore. When finished
teaching, Jesus told Simon to go farther out into the lake and let down the nets to bring in a catch of fish ...
Luke 5:1 And it came to pass, that, as the
people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of
Gennesaret, 2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen
were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. 3 And he entered
into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would
thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the
people out of the ship. 4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto
Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
Although their efforts to catch fish the entire previous night had resulted in nothing, because Jesus told him to do this, Simon did it ...
Luke 5:5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word
I will let down the net.
When they did according to what Jesus told them,
they caught so many fish that two ships were filled to the point of
sinking ...
Luke 5:6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a
great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. 7 And they beckoned
unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come
and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they
began to sink.
When we have heard to do something from the Holy
Spirit, thoughts sometimes come to reason it away or take us in another direction. We can turn to God with each of these thoughts to be established in His truth.
If we believe
the instruction we have received is from the Holy Spirit (asking God to confirm this if we're not sure), we obey in faith, believing we
have heard from God and trusting Him in what we are told to do.
And we know that the word God speaks will accomplish what HE pleases ...
Isaiah 55:10 For as the rain cometh down,
and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the
earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the
sower, and bread to the eater: 11 So shall my word be that goeth forth
out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall
accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing
whereto I sent it.
