Why was Abel's offering accepted by God and Cain's offering rejected?

Joan Boney ... apostle/prophet

Hebrews 11:4   By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

Both brothers offered sacrifices to God.  Abel's sacrifice was accepted while Cain's was rejected.  Cain was jealous of his brother and slew his brother.

Genesis 4:1-16    And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.

And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof.

And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:  But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door.

And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother?

And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?

And HE said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto ME from the ground.

And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;

When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.

Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.

And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.

And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

I looked carefully at these two offerings and could not determine why one was blessed while the other was cursed by God.

Then one day, God opened my eyes to understand.

Abel offered by faithCain did not.

Look again at the description in Hebrews 11:4.

Hebrews 11:4   By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

It tells us the reason, "by faith", in the first two words of Hebrews 11:4.

I saw this same thing recently in our own little church group.

One person offered a writing "by faith".  We enjoyed her writing very much in front of all.

Another person in our group saw this and copied this offering, I suspect desiring approval as the first person had received. And desiring to do something "clever".

I was deeply grieved at the second offering.  I saw it was as Esau tried to copy Jacob.

Esau overheard the displeasure expressed by his father over the marriage of Esau, the woman he selected.

The father, Isaac, ordered Jacob to go to the relatives of his people and select a wife.

Esau wanted the approval ... so he tried to copy his brother to get his father's approval.

So then Esau went to the daughters of Ishmael and got a wife.

Ishmael was of the flesh, not of the promise.  Esau was also of the flesh.

Flesh will never please God.

Genesis 27:46   And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth: if Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these which are of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me?

Genesis 28:1-2    And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan.  Arise, go to Padanaram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother's father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban thy mother's brother.

Genesis 28:6-9    When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padanaram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan;  And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Padanaram;

And Esau seeing that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father;

Then went Esau unto Ishmael, and took unto the wives which he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham's son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.

Esau tried to copy his brother to get the approval of his father.

Jude vv. 17-19   But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ;  How that they told you there should be mockers (copiers) in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.  These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit.

If you try to copy another person in the body of Christ and make yourself approved by copying, you will bring shame upon yourself and end up as Cain and Esau, who did not act by faith in God but rather imitated and even murdered to get what they wanted and tried to bless themselves by their own works.

Only by faith in God can you approve yourself in the church and in the sight of God.
