Podcast: God says in Old Testament that if anyone fails to keep the sabbath and does work on the sabbath, he will be put to death

Christians groups often preach, "Remember the sabbath to keep it holy."

I've often seen white signs in front of houses with the 10 commandments from God from the Old Testament listed.

Look at what God says they are to do if they fail to keep the sabbath.

Exodus 31

13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily MY sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between ME and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.

14 Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.

15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.

On the sabbath of the Old Testament, they were not permitted to gather their food or cook their food on the sabbath.  (They certainly could not go to grocery to buy food on the sabbath, nor could they even go out to gather manna on the sabbath.  They had to gather a double amount of manna on the day before the sabbath for God would not give them manna on the sabbath.  (Ex. 16:19-27) )

They could do no work on the sabbath.  They could not leave their tents on the sabbath for it was a rest unto the Lord.

(You certainly could not watch entertainment on TV or go to sporting events on the Old Testament sabbath.)

The New Testament sabbath is completely different from the Old Testament.

Here is the New Testament sabbath:

Hebrews 4

1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into HIS rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as HE said, As I have sworn in MY wrath, if they shall enter into MY rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

4 For HE spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all HIS works.

5 And in this place again, If they shall enter into MY rest.

6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:

7 Again, HE limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear HIS voice, harden not your hearts.

8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would HE not afterward have spoken of another day.

9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

10 For he that is entered into HIS rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from HIS.

11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

The sabbath for the New Testament is trusting in God daily, resting in the Word God speaks that day, and ceasing from trying to "figure out what to do", a daily sabbath to the Lord as we turn to HIM with every problem and wait for God to give us the way to go in the daily issues of this present life.

Every day is a sabbath in the New Testament church, ceasing from our own works that we can do HIS works.
