πŸ’₯ Man looking for power.


In the 1970's I owned a business in American Indian Arts.

A man came into my shop one day looking for art objects that translate power.

I took aside and said to him:  There are no symbols on art objects that give you power.  But there is a power.  And I began telling him about the power that comes to us through God.

A few years ago, on TV, a saw University of Arkansas baseball fans wearing bananas on their heads.  They thought this would bring their team "good luck".  I could hardly believe what I was seeing. Sometimes before the player went up to bat, fans would be seen rubbing the bananas they had put on their heads.  

In USA many think it brings good luck to eat black eyed peas on New Years Day.

At weddings the bride throws a bouquet into the place where her friend have gathered after the wedding.  They live in a superstition that the woman who catches the bouquet will be the next to marry.

People often click drinking glasses together for luck.

Many people do things looking for a power outside of God.  Even Christians do this.

After we become a Christian we must consider what we do in this life.  We no longer live as the pagans of this world live.  Now our trust is in God and we no longer live by the superstitions of man.

But many church goers also do superstitions.  I've seen individuals cross themselves thinking this brings them some kind of blessing or power.  Some light candles at church thinking there is a power in this act.  But none of these things are in the Bible and they are pagan superstitions set up by man.

The apostle Paul says they which do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

I Corinthians 6

9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Power from God.

James 1:5  If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

Isaiah 54:17  No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of ME, saith the LORD.

Psalm 1

1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in HIS law doth he meditate day and night.

Hebrews 13

5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

Acts 1:8   Jesus says:  But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
