Two ways

Joan Boney ... apostle/prophet

I Chron. 5:20 ... And they were helped against them, and the Hagarites were delivered into their hand, and all that were with them: for they cried to God in the battle, and he was intreated of them; because they put their trust in him.

I Chron. 5:25 ... And they transgressed against the God of their fathers, and went a whoring after the gods of the people of the land, whom God destroyed before them. 26And the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Assyria, and the spirit of Tilgathpilneser king of Assyria, and he carried them away

Two ways ... In once case they called on God for wisdom and help.  In the other case they went after the gods of the people of the land.

In the first example, God helped them because by calling on Him they put their trust in HIM.  Each time we pray over things we put our trust in God.  And we are helped by God.  Sometimes we put our trust in ourselves, never even thinking of God, we are wise in our own eyes.  And when we do this over and over, our oil drains and we step into darkness of our own flesh or the flesh of others.

In the second example, God stirred up the spirit of an enemy and that enemy carried them off into bondage because they were seeking "another god", the god of the people.  Most people have for their god other people.  They set about one way or another to please other people, making those people gods to themselves.  They try to dress to please them.  They try to be interested in the things that interest them.  Before you know it they have departed from the living God and are chasing something else and they end up going into a type of bondage.

All these examples in the Old Testaments are example to us.
