The Spirit of God searches the heart of God and reveals the will of God to us concerning the specific issues of this present life as we deal with problems.
It is only by the Spirit of God that we can know the will of God.
I Cor. 2 ... Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: 7But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: 8Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 10But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 12Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
The Spirit of God, who dwells in the people of God, does not speak of his own ideas. The Spirit of God searches the heart of God to reveal God's will to us.
So we are confronted with a problem. And all we want in the midst of the problem is to know what God wants us to do about the matter at hand. So we pray. And we wait for God to show us by HIS Spirit.
Sometimes we will be reminded of a scripture. Sometimes we will be reminded of a word. Sometimes we will be reminded of a dream. These are ways God speaks by HIS Spirit.
And the following are things the Holy Spirit does.
- teaches us all things
- reminds us of everything said by Jesus
- guides us into all truth
- shows us things to come
Jn. 14:26 ... But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
Jn. 16:13 ... Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
But there are other spirits that try to imitate the Holy Spirit so John warns us to "try the spirits" to see whether they are from God.
The way I try the spirit is to pray, asking God to confirm what HE is saying when in doubt. And I wait until I am absolute sure. Then when I am sure that it is God speaking, I move immediately.

James 3:17
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
Beware if there is any competition or strife involved for we see this can be wisdom from another source. James 3 ... But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. 15This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. 16For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
