Some things to consider:
* This happened to "the third part" of the earth. And it could be spread out in various countries throughout this world which would make it more difficult to recognize that this was happening.
* The length of time is not made clear to us. It could happen in one calendar year or it could happen in 2 or more calendar years.
In 2020, fires destroyed the trees and green grass in California, in the Amazon rain forest, and in Australia.
In 2021, fires destroyed trees and green grass in California, Oregon, British Colombia, and Siberia.
Could this be 1/3 of the earth? Perhaps.
So it is very possible if this should be the first of the Great Tribulation, many would not recognize it as such.
The scientists just keep saying these unusual fires are caused by climate change.
So we see how the day of the Lord could come upon many unawares.

The scientists who have to explain the reason for things that happen, will likely not be able to explain away the second event of the great tribulation so easily.
Revelation 8:8-9 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.
But humans might try to explain this away somehow.
Because Daniel says: Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand. Daniel 12:10
