* The prophesies concerning Eli the priest's house are fulfilled. The ark is taken by the Philistines.

Prophecies against Eli the priest and his house were spoken by the man of God and by the child Samuel because of the evil done by the sons of Eli and because Eli refused to restrain his household.

These prophecies come to pass in the following chapter. 

I Samuel 4:1-2    Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.  And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.

3  And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the Lord smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the Lord out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.

So they sent to Shiloh to have the ark of the covenant delivered to them.  

And the two sons of Eli the priest, Hophni and Phinehas, were with the ark.

But Hophni and Phinehas are evil in the sight of God.

I Samuel 4:10-11  And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.

And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

(The prophecies spoken against these sons said they would both be slain the same day.  I Samuel 2)

I Samuel 4:12-18    And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.

And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. 


And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.

And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? 


And the man came in hastily, and told Eli.

Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see.


And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. 

And he said, What is there done, my son? 

And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken

And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

19-22   And his daughter in law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.

And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it. And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband. 

And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.

The Philistines have taken the ark of the covenant to their city, Ashdod.  And they placed the ark beside their god, Dagon.

This brings great trouble to the Philistines!  And they have to figure a way out of this trouble.

Living in the superstitions of man will not work well for those who observe such.

Often even Christians observe pagan superstitions, such as:

* Eating black eyed peas on  New Year's day, for "luck".  (bad luck as it turns out when Christians do such)

* Fear of such things as the number 13.

* Doing as the pagans and decorating graves.

* Clicking drink glasses together for "luck".

* Tossing bridal bouquet at weddings to predict who will be next bride. (Fortune telling and witchcraft)

I even witnessed a college baseball team and their fans wearing bananas on their heads for "luck".  (They lost the game but I don't know if they dispensed with their good luck charm.)

All forms of "witchcraft" are condemned by God and superstitions of man are a form of observing witchcrafts.

As Christians, we put aside such pagan things and we put our trust in the living God.

I Corinthians 6:9-10    Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:19-21   Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
