Something that helps me when I'm troubled about something and pray about it is to write down what I'm praying as I am praying, pretty much word for word. Kind of as if I was writing a letter to God about the matter, pouring out my heart before God.
Somehow, this seems to help me focus as I talk with God about the matter and I think kind of controls my mind from quickly and continuously going from one thing to another. It calms me down.
And if I hear something from the Holy Spirit as I'm praying, this helps me grab that and not let it slip. I write it down right away and later add it to what I am meditating on at the time so I can keep it in front of me for a while.
If other matters come to mind while I'm praying about something, I just make a quick note so I can go over that with God when I finish the current thing without being concerned that I'll forget it.
I keep a notebook by the chair I often sit in just for the purpose of writing down what I'm praying and anything I hear from the Holy Spirit as I pray.
I don't do this all the time, but am always helped when I do.
And I almost never go back and read what I've prayed/written in the notebook (my writing is so messy it would be hard to read at any rate!). It just helps me as I'm praying.

I like what Pam recommended about prayer so much I want to do it. Pam set up a way I could write my prayers out to God daily on my computer. And at 2:30 today, I began doing this.
