The Philistine Idol, Dagon, Cannot Stand Against God

The ark of the covenant contained the Word of God, the two tablets upon which God wrote HIS Word to the children of Israel.  As long as the ark of the covenant was with them, they prospered.  God was with them.

In NT, as long as we live in the Word of God, as children of God, following the Spirit of God, we succeed.  When we go off in our own way, we bring much trouble upon ourselves.

When we return to God through prayer and obey what HE says, we succeed.



1 Samuel 4

1-5  Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.   And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.  

And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the Lord smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the Lord out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.   

So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.   

And when the ark of the covenant of the Lord came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.

When God enters, it is exciting!

A young man described the Bible as "legalistic."

I was so grieved when I heard this.  I turned to God and said, "This really troubles me."

Later that day the Holy Spirit brought the following to my mind.

Mt. 7:13-14 ... Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

I was so joyful and excited!

When God enters, we shout for joy for God is life and excitement.

The world wants freedom to sin.  God sets up HIS word to keep us from those sins.  The darkness of sin is destructive.  The light is life and God is total light and rejoicing to us.

And there is no way we are going to be defeated when God is with us.   So when God came into the camp, they all shouted with joy.  We should know exactly what that feels like!

I Samuel 4

6-11  And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the Lord was come into the camp.  

And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp.

And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.   Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.   Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight. 

And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen. 

How could Israel be smitten?  The ark of God is in the camp.  But there is a prophecy spoken against the two sons of Eli because they were wicked and Eli did not restrain his sons. (I Sam. 2:27-34)  God fulfills that prophecy in this defeat of Israel.  The two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are slain and the Philistines carry away the ark of God.  They will set the ark of God beside their god Dagon.  Here is that story.
 

And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.


1 Samuel 5

1-12  And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod.   

When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon (their god), and set it by Dagon.  

And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the Lord.

And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.   

And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.   Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.

But the hand of the Lord was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and HE destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.   

And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for HIS hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.

They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? 

And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.  

And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the Lord was against the city with a very great destruction: and HE smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts. 

Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.

So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to HIS own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.   And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.


1 Samuel 6 


1-12  And the ark of the Lord was in the country of the Philistines seven months.   

And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the Lord? tell us wherewith we shall send it to HIS place.   

And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return HIM a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why HIS hand is not removed from you.   

Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to HIM? 

They answered, Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.   Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure HE will lighten HIS hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.

Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when HE had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?   

Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them:   And take the ark of the Lord, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return HIM for a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.   

And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Bethshemesh, then HE hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not HIS hand that smote us: it was a chance that happened to us. 

And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home:   And they laid the ark of the Lord upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods.   And the kine took the straight way to the way of Bethshemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Bethshemesh.   

13-15 And they of Bethshemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.   

And the cart came into the field of Joshua, a Bethshemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered the kine a burnt offering unto the Lord.  

And the Levites took down the ark of the Lord, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Bethshemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the Lord. 

In OT the Levites were the ones approved to handle the things of God.  II Samuel 6, they were moving the ark of God and the cart slipped and Uzzah reached up to steady the ark and God killed him.  Uzzah was not appointed by God to handle the ark.  So when they dealt with the ark of God, they had to do such in a specific way even though they were the children of Israel.  I think you have to be careful in NT church concerning the way you handle the Word of God which is equivalent to the ark of God in OT.  And I think those persons who try to be NT ministers without being ordained and anointed and called by God to do so will be severely judged at some point in time.  For Jesus gave these "gifts" of apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, teacher to the church and unless the person is ordained by God to do the work, he will be operating by his own willful flesh.  Thus Jesus said in the last days "many" would come in HIS name saying Jesus is the Christ and would deceive manyMt. 24:4-5
  

I Samuel 6

19-21  And HE (God) smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the Lord, even HE smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men  (50,070 men killed by God): and the people lamented, because the Lord had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.   

And the men of Bethshemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy Lord God? and to whom shall he go up from us?

And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjathjearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of the Lord; come ye down, and fetch it up to you.

1 Sam. 7:1-2  And the men of Kirjathjearim came, and fetched up the ark of the Lord, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the Lord. 

And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjathjearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.

Here is the story of the man who was killed by God because he was not authorized by God to handle the ark and he thought he was doing a good thing by steadying the ark but God's anger arose and HE killed this man.


2 Samuel 6

1-5  Again, David gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand.   And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the Lord of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims.   

And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart.  

And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark.  

And David and all the house of Israel played before the Lord on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals.  

6-11  And when they came to Nachon's threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it.   And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.   

And David was displeased, because the Lord had made a breach upon Uzzah: and he called the name of the place Perezuzzah to this day.   And David was afraid of the Lord that day, and said, How shall the ark of the Lord come to me?  

So David would not remove the ark of the Lord unto him into the city of David: but David carried it aside into the house of Obededom the Gittite.   

And the ark of the Lord continued in the house of Obededom the Gittite three months: and the Lord blessed Obededom, and all his household.  

12-19  And it was told king David, saying, The Lord hath blessed the house of Obededom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obededom into the city of David with gladness.   

And it was so, that when they that bare the ark of the Lord had gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings.  

And David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod.  

So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.  

And as the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal Saul's daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart.  

And they brought in the ark of the Lord, and set it in his place, in the midst of the tabernacle that David had pitched for it: and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.  

And as soon as David had made an end of offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts.   And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, as well to the women as men, to every one a cake of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine. So all the people departed every one to his house.  

20-23  Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel to day, who uncovered himself to day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself!  

And David said unto Michal, It was before the Lord, which chose me before thy father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel: therefore will I play before the Lord.   And I will yet be more vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight: and of the maidservants which thou hast spoken of, of them shall I be had in honour.  

Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death.

The handling of the ark of God parallels the handling of the Word of God.

It is a very serious matter to handle the Word of God incorrectly... to eat and drink incorrectly as you handle scripture.

The eating and drinking of the Word of God is the Lord's supper.  (not crackers and grape juice which have no power)

There is a penalty if you handle the Word of God incorrectly.

The apostle Paul explains:

I Cor. 11 

28-31   For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep (die).

For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.

As we read the Bible, or as we consider those words spoken to our mind by the Holy Spirit, we judge ourselves also by that Word.  We make appropriate changes to our lives by that Word.  It is the power of God.
