Examples of prophets in the churches in the New Testament

Joan Boney ... apostle/prophet

Some churches today say there are no longer prophets in the church.

But in the Bible, which is our guide for knowing the church operation set by God, we see several examples in the New Testament of prophets in the churches.

Acts 13:1 ...Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen,

Acts 11 ... 27 And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch. 28 And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world:which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar. 29 Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea:30 Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

Acts 21 ... 10 And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus. 11 And when he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.

After Jesus was crucified and rose from the dead, we read in Eph. 4, HE (Jesus) gave gifts to the church ...

Eph. 4 ... 11 And HE gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into HIM in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

There is a difference between prophet's work in OT and prophet's work in NT.

In the OT, God gave HIS Spirit to the prophets and the people came to the prophets to seek the counsel of God.

But in the NT, God gave all believers the Holy Spirit so they could go directly to God to see what God would have them do in issues pertaining to this present life.

Heb. 1 ...   1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; 4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

Today, God writes HIS "laws" directly into our hearts and minds and the Holy Spirit lives in each of us who are the church.  The Holy Spirit searches the heart of God and reveals God's heart on the matter at hand to us directly.  I Cor. 2  / Heb. 8 & Heb 10

God might still send a prophet to deliver a message to an individual, such as the prophet Agabus was sent to the apostle Paul to show Paul what would happen to him at Jerusalem.  Acts 21:10-11

God often shows sins in the church to prophets.  Prophets often speak to the church concerning sins to try to turn them from specific sins.

Paul often traveled with a prophet, Silas.

Acts 15:32 And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them.

We see these prophets "exhorted" the brethren ... and confirmed them.

It is very wrong for any one to say there are no longer prophets.  The scriptures show us prophets are gifts from Jesus to the NT church today and there are multiple examples of prophets working in the NT church in the Bible.
