Podcast: Part 4: Psalms of David. (Prayers of David)

This Podcast contains Psalm 39 through Psalm 60.

Examples:

Psalm 39

1 I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me.

2 I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred.

3 My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned: then spake I with my tongue,

4 LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am.

5 Behold, THOU hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before THEE: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity.

6 Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.

7 And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in THEE.

Psalm 40

1 I waited patiently for the LORD; and HE inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

2 HE brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

3 And HE hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.

4 Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.

5 Many, O LORD my God, are THY wonderful works which THOU hast done, and THY thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto THEE: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.

Psalm 41

9 Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.

10 But THOU, O LORD, be merciful unto me, and raise me up, that I may requite them.

11 By this I know that THOU favourest me, because mine enemy doth not triumph over me.

12 And as for me, THOU upholdest me in mine integrity, and settest me before THY face for ever.

13 Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting, and to everlasting. Amen, and Amen.

Psalm 52

(A Psalm of David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, David is come to the house of Ahimelech. I Samuel 22)

1 Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God endureth continually.

2 Thy tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

3 Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness.

4 Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue.

5 God shall likewise destroy thee for ever, HE shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of thy dwelling place, and root thee out of the land of the living.

6 The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him:

7 Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.

8 But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever.

9 I will praise THEE for ever, because THOU hast done it: and I will wait on THY name; for it is good before THY saints.

Psalm 54

(A Psalm of David, when the Ziphims came and said to Saul, Doth not David hide himself with us?)

1 Save me, O God, by THY name, and judge me by THY strength.

2 Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth.

3 For strangers are risen up against me, and oppressors seek after my soul: they have not set God before them.

4 Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.

5 HE shall reward evil unto mine enemies: cut them off in THY truth.

6 I will freely sacrifice unto THEE: I will praise THY name, O LORD; for it is good.

7 For HE hath delivered me out of all trouble: and mine eye hath seen HIS desire upon mine enemies.

Psalm 55

1 Give ear to my prayer, O God; and hide not THYSELF from my supplication.

2 Attend unto me, and hear me: I mourn in my complaint, and make a noise;

3 Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me.

4 My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me.

5 Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me.

6 And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.

7 Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness.

8 I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest.

9 Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city.

10 Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it.

11 Wickedness is in the midst thereof: deceit and guile depart not from her streets.

12 For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him:

13 But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.

14 We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.

15 Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.

16 As for me, I will call upon God; and the LORD shall save me.

Psalm 56

(A psalm of David, when the Philistines took him in Gath.)

1 Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me.

2 Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High.

3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in THEE.

Psalm 57

(A Psalm of David, when he fled from Saul in the cave.)

1 Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in THEE: yea, in the shadow of THY wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.

2 I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me.

3 He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up.  God shall send forth HIS mercy and HIS truth.

4 My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

5 Be THOU exalted, O God, above the heavens; let THY glory be above all the earth.

Psalm 59

(Psalm of David; when Saul sent, and they watched the house to kill him.)

1 Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God: defend me from them that rise up against me.

2 Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men.

3 For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul: the mighty are gathered against me; not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O LORD.

4 They run and prepare themselves without my fault: awake to help me, and behold.

5 THOU therefore, O LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, awake to visit (judge)  all the heathen: be not merciful to any wicked transgressors.

6 They return at evening: they make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.

7 Behold, they belch out with their mouth: swords are in their lips: for who, say they, doth hear?

8 But THOU, O LORD, shalt laugh at them; THOU shalt have all the heathen in derision.

9 Because of his strength will I wait upon THEE: for God is my defence.

10 The God of my mercy shall prevent (go before) me: God shall let me see my desire upon mine enemies.

11 Slay them not, lest my people forget: scatter them by THY power; and bring them down, O Lord our shield.

12 For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips let them even be taken in their pride: and for cursing and lying which they speak.

13 Consume them in wrath, consume them, that they may not be: and let them know that God ruleth in Jacob unto the ends of the earth.

14 And at evening let them return; and let them make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.

15 Let them wander up and down for meat, and grudge if they be not satisfied.

16 But I will sing of THY power; yea, I will sing aloud of THY mercy in the morning: for THOU hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble.

Psalm 60

(Psalm of David, to teach; when he strove with Aramnaharaim and with Aramzobah, when Joab returned, and smote of Edom in the valley of salt twelve thousand.)

1 O God, THOU hast cast us off, THOU hast scattered us, THOU hast been displeased; O turn thyself to us again.

2 THOU hast made the earth to tremble; THOU hast broken it: heal the breaches thereof; for it shaketh.

3 THOU hast shewed THY people hard things: THOU hast made us to drink the wine of astonishment.

4 THOU hast given a banner to them that fear THEE, that it may be displayed because of the truth.

5 That THY beloved may be delivered; save with THY right hand, and hear me.

11 Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man.

12 Through God we shall do valiantly: for HE it is that shall tread down our enemies.
