The Catholic church calls certain dead people "saints".
But the saints, according to the Bible, are all people who belong to God whether living or dead.
They are not appointed as saints by other men but rather they are the ones who are chosen by God and put into the church by God, having the spirit of God.
We who belong to God are the saints.
Paul says:
II Corinthians 2:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia:
"Saints" are the church.

"The Saints" are those in the church who are born again by the Holy Spirit of God and have God living in them by HIS Spirit.
The Catholic church is corrupt in their approach to "honoring" certain people by calling those people "saints". And they teach their followers that dead people watch over them as if to take the place of God which is a terrible thing to do.
We, the church both living and dead, are the "saints".
