Jesus says:
John 8:
31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on HIM, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

When God reveals HIS Word to us, That Word often divides us from the people with whom we once associated.
We are recreated in the image of Christ each time the Word from God is given to us. And that Word from God is given to us in part as long as we live on this present earth. Over and over we are recreated in the image of Christ, The Word.
The Word from God also divides us from those who do not believe the Word.
Jesus says: Luke 12
51 Suppose ye that I (The Word) am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:52 For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

When God speaks the Word to us, we are divided from those who do not hear the Word.
I Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
So the Word comes to us and we follow the Word and we continue to follow the Word, and that Word makes us free from the unbelievers who do not follow the Word. Usually, in time, the unbelievers will leave us. Those who are of the Spirit of God will remain with us for we, too, have the Spirit of God.
Freedom from the unbelievers is not bad but is good!
We go forth in righteousness of God with other who follow the Spirit of God and we live in peace with them.
Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
