* The Spirit of the Lord comes upon Saul

Joan Boney ... apostle/prophet

When the Spirit of God comes upon us, we have a mighty power to deal with situations.

In the new covenant church we are sealed with God's spirit after we believe the Word of God.  Ephesians 1

The Holy Spirit dwells in us, in the children of God.  The Holy Spirit searches the heart of God concerning us and brings to our mind that which God says about the issue at hand so we then know what we are do to.   I Corinthians 2

Thus we follow God by HIS Spirit.

When we have a problem and don't know what to do, we pray, asking God for help, asking God what we should do.

Then at some point an idea comes and we know that is what we are being shown to do.  Or God might give us a dream showing us what to do.  Or we might be reading the Bible and we see a scripture which burns though us and we know that is what we should do.

The Holy Spirit comes upon us and then we know what to do.

Usually it will be in the form of a simple idea, a thought that comes to our mind.

In the following story, the Holy Spirit came upon Saul in the form of anger!

And Saul took action based on this anger, and in this case, it began Saul's reign as king of Israel.

Saul was chosen by God to be king of Israel after the people demanded a king.  Samuel had been sent to Saul by God to anoint Saul as king.  Now a situation occurs which causes Saul to take action and to become a visible king over Israel.

God has HIS way of getting us where HE wants us.

***

I Samuel 11:1-13 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabeshgilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.

And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.

And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.

Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.

And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.

And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.

The Spirit of God is such great power, often causing us to take action.  It is not that the Spirit makes us take action but there is a power inside us when the Spirit is leading and that power is an energy, somewhat like a jolt of electricity, which moves us, but we still have choice in that which we do.

And he
(Saul) took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
  (330,000 men of war)

And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabeshgilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.

And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.

And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the Lord hath wrought salvation in Israel.

In the beginning stages of his life, Saul took wise actions by the Spirit of God.  But later in life, Saul became as a crazy man because he did not wholly follow the instructions of God.  He then became as a person turned over to a reprobate mind as is described in Romans 1.

Romans 1:28-31   And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,  Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

I Samuel 11:14-15
Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.

And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the Lord; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
