Instruction in Bible concerning hymns

Joan Boney … apostle/prophet

God uses hymns to build us up in spiritual things and to fight destructive thoughts that would come to mind.

When the rulers of the synagogue put Paul and Silas (a prophet) into prison and put their feet in stocks, Paul and Silas prayed and sang hymns.

Acts 16:19-25    And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers,

And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,  And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.

And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them.

And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:  Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.
  25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God:

A woman from our church group had a physical problem which caused terrible pain.  She was placed in hospital.  When the pain hit and continued she sang hymns at the top of her voice!  I thought this amazing when I heard of this.

Ephesians 5:18-20    And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

A woman in our church group told this story about her mother.

In her later years my mother had a dementia similar to Alzheimer’s.

There were times she would become agitated, angry.

But if she or someone else put on one of her albums of hymns, she would sit down quietly and listen to them, sometimes singing along with lyrics.

I Samuel 16:14-17; 23    But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.

And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.

23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

Colossians 3:16   Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.
