During Jeremiah's life, Judah and Israel did much wickedness against God and would not repent when Jeremiah delivered messages to them.  So God raised up an adversary, the king of Babylon, against them.  And they were taken captive to serve in Babylon.  And Jerusalem was set on fire and destroyed.  The sentence was 70 years of captivity.  Those who refused to serve in captivity to Babylon and tried to flee into Egypt were much worse off and often slain in Egypt.  It was ordained by God.  Jeremiah, the prophet, told them God said HE would do this to them and HE did.  (Read Jeremiah 39-43)

Jeremiah 6:9-10  Thus saith the LORD of hosts, They shall throughly glean the remnant of Israel as a vine: turn back thine hand as a grapegatherer into the baskets.

10 To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of the LORD is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it.

I know I have been warned multiple times by God to stop doing something.  If I obey it is fine.  But when I stubbornly continue in my own way, I bring upon myself judgment (punishment) from God.

So be quick to hear what God says and do what God says.

1 Peter 2:9-10    But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of HIM who hath called you out of darkness into HIS marvellous light;

10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
