For quite some time I have turned on the television to watch the local 5pm news, primarily to see the weather forecast, but also there was usually at least 1 news story that interested me.
A couple weeks ago, however, I found that I was becoming very disturbed when I watched newscasts.
So I changed my routine, choosing to do or watch something else rather than turning to the news.
This has been so much more peaceful for me. At first, a few times I automatically started to turn to the news, but would be reminded of how disturbed I had been by it and would quickly stop. Now that habit seems to be mostly broken. I seldom think of the news and find I don't miss hearing the current events or even the weather forecasts. (I can check the weather app on my phone, if needed.)
While thinking about this change and the peace that has resulted, and that I don't feel any lack, I was reminded of what we're told in 2 Peter 1:2-3.
2 Peter 1:2-3 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
3 According as HIS divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of HIM that hath called us to glory and virtue:
Each day God gives us everything needed for life and godliness. HE knows exactly what we need and provides that. And we can be spared hearing and seeing things that disturb us unnecessarily. This makes me so grateful to God.
It reminds me of choosing the "good part", as Mary did when she sat at Jesus' feet and listened to HIM. Jesus said:
Luke 10:42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
I want to continue choosing the "good part", focusing on what God gives to me each day and those things which result in peace.
