James 5:16 The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Something happened recently which made me think of the above scripture and the effectual fervent prayer described here and how I had such a strong desire to pray this way.
My husband has a friend who had a medical incident recently where he suddenly started stumbling as he walked, slurring his words and having involuntary facial muscle contractions.
His friend, who was with him, immediately called 911 and it was diagnosed as a cyst which had grown on the surface of his brain. He has been transferred to a rehab hospital for the time being. He may have to have surgery or maybe not. Doctors are evaluating the situation.
Scott is about 69 years old. His wife is several years older than he is and in the early stages of dementia, according to her husband, so she doesn't drive any longer.
I first met Scott several years ago when we lived close to him and he would come to the house to see my husband as he was in the same astronomy club as my husband.
One day he started talking about how it was God Who had created the universe. That got my attention so we started talking about God and did this a few times on his subsequent visits. I found out, at some point, that he attended a catholic church but there was something about him that made me wonder if maybe he was a Christian. He showed a genuine, I think, joy when we talked about God and there seemed to be an openness to the things I felt led to share with him. But I really don't know.
He and his wife have been on my mind recently when I would think about how difficult and frightening this must be for them. Then the other day I suddenly felt such a fervent desire to pray for them, asking God to please help them to get through this, providing for them whatever they need, as only He knows how to do this and what they truly need.
When I was a younger and newer Christian there were times when I used to try to pray for other people thinking it was what I should do now that I was a Christian, but so often my heart wasn't in it and I came to realize they were just empty words.
I have come to believe James 5:16 The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
I have seen prayers like this be answered by God in my life in the past and it is always such a joy and testament to the power and love of God when this happens.
