Several years ago I was engaged to marry a man named Chuck, who said he was a Christian.
One evening as we talked on the telephone, Chuck told me his adult-aged son, who was in the military and stationed in Germany, had just become engaged to be married. He was very excited for his son and in telling me about the young woman he was to marry, he mentioned that she was divorced.
I shared with Chuck what we're told in Matthew 5:32, that a man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Matthew 5:32 But I (Jesus) say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
After I shared this, Chuck became very quiet, then terminated the phone call.
Over the next few days it became clear that my sharing this had greatly upset Chuck, and he didn't want any more to do with me. We landed up breaking our engagement.
I was shocked. As I was trying to grasp what had just happened, the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, said to me, "Be not unequally yoked together with unbelievers." (2 Corinthians 6:14)
At first I didn't understand why I was being reminded of this scripture, but the Holy Spirit explained to me that Chuck is an unbeliever because he doesn't believe what we're told in Matthew 5:32, that a man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. For if he believed this scripture, he would have warned his son rather than turning away from me.
Healing for me started with these truths spoken by the Holy Spirit, and I no longer hoped for a reconciliation with Chuck.
2 Corinthians 6:14-18
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what
fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion
hath light with darkness?
15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be MY people.
17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be MY sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
What a comfort this is!

At the time this happened I was working at a secular job. Those I worked with knew I had been planning to marry, and that the engagement had been suddenly stopped.
Only two people asked me what had happened. Both of these people were church-going people. When each of these people asked, I explained to them exactly what had happened, sharing Matthew 5:32. In each case, the person said nothing in response to what I shared. Neither showed any understanding. After a short silence, they changed the subject to something else. Nothing more was ever said to me by either of these people about what had happened to stop my engagement.
1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
