I John 4 (John says)
1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is HE that is in you, than he that is in the world.

John is assuring us that we don't have to be afraid to try these spirits for the spirit of God in us is all powerful through God and more powerful than spirits that are not of God.
But we must try the spirit that brings ideas to us to be sure it is of God. Devils will try to take us opposite to the way of God and devils can bring thoughts to our mind.
If
we fail to try the spirit, the words spoken to us by that spirit will
go down into our heart and remain and at some point those words will
surface through our mouth and defile others and harm others.
***
To try the Spirit, after the spirit speaks an idea to me, I say: "Do you confess that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh?"
Often I will hear, "No."
When I try that spirit and that spirit says, "No", then I know that thought sent is not sent by God and I do not continue in that thought. It is put to death when I try it and hear, "No".

A
woman in our church group told me she was thinking of replacing her
kitchen cabinet. She was thinking of a laminate material she has heard
about which is cheaper than granite. She began looking on-line and found
the material and was asking me if I knew of this material. (No ... I've never heard of it and know nothing.)
But I do know some godly principles which lead me in right ways and never disappoint me.
* First you pray for God to show you if you should do this project and to stop you if you shouldn't do the project.
If God shows you to pursue the project, I would then pray for God to lead me and give me wisdom in how to do this project.
James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
***
But at every phase of the project, you would need to "try the spirit" to see if it is God bringing the idea to you.
Devils
would like to consume us and destroy us with projects. But if it is
God, the project is the right way for us to go. And there is a time and
season for everything.

1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
10 But the God of all grace, Who hath called us unto His eternal glory
by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect,
stablish, strengthen, settle you.
This woman was just rambling ... going from idea to idea.
A
couple of days after she told me this, I called her and reviewed with
her the way to approach such projects and become established by God. Mainly it became clear that spirits were bringing ideas to her mind and she was not trying those spirits and she was filled with many torments and with much confusion.
She
knows how to try the spirits ... and she has done this successfully in
the past ... but then she just stopped doing this and became very
confused with thoughts from devils.

Several years ago, I said to God, I don't like to speak to other spirits. God said to me, "You talk to ME." (God is a spirit. John 4:24) I said, "Oh."
In the Bible, the apostle John, told us to "try the spirits" and we must do this to go forward safely.
There may be some fear inside the person who is trying the spirit. But notice that the apostle John said to us: I John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is HE that is in you, than he that is in the world.
The
Holy Spirit that is in us is "greater" than the spirit of the devil
that would bring ideas to us. The devil will always try to take us in
an opposite way from the way of God. So we must settle each thought: "Is this the spirit of God that brought that idea to me?"
