Chapter 1

Overcoming By The Spirit Is Not Automatic

I was baptized in water when I was 15-years-old.

I was born again by the Spirit of God when I was 37-years-old. Then I had another spirit in me, to lead me and to guide me. Now I could overcome through God. I was a new creature.

II Cor. 5:17Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Overcoming through God’s Spirit is not automatic.

We learn to hear God and to pay attention to that small voice speaking in form of a thought, an idea … and then we choose to do that which is in keeping with the instruction given by that “small voice” in us, The Holy Spirit, The Spirit of Truth, The Comforter

God speaks to us by HIS Holy Spirit who brings ideas to our mind to show us what to do.  However the devil also speaks to us to take us in ways opposite to God.

Therefore the apostle John says:

I John 4:1-4  Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

I have often tried the "spirit" to see if that spirit that brought me that thought is from God, by saying, "Do you confess Jesus is come in the flesh."  and after asking that question, that spirit will bring to my mind either "Yes" or "No."

A woman told me she had "heard" multiple times this word concerning another woman in our church: "Sandra will be moving to Colorado."

I told Sandra what Barbara said.  Sandra said, "Was that from God?"

I asked Barbara did she try that spirit to see if that word was from God?  Barbara said, "No I did not."

So I did.

I said:  Spirit that said to Barbara, "Sandra will move to Colorado,"  do you confess Jesus is come in the flesh?  and  brought to my mind was, "No".

(This may sound like some kind of witchcraft, but I point out that the apostle John said to do this in the Holy Bible.)

So I do it because in the Bible it tells me to "try the spirit" and this is the only way I know how to try a spirit and I have seen this work.

(In the end times, which I think we live in now, deception will be rampant. I believe it is very important for born again Christians to try the spirit that brought the idea or thought.)

*****

When I was born again in 1975, God said to me: “Joan … you know all those mistakes you’ve been making all these years? Those weren’t mistakes. Those were sins.”  (This was not an audible voice but a concept brought to my mind.)

SINS? … I was very shocked! I thought they were mistakes.

With that word from God, I was born again immediately by the Spirit of God and was given the Holy Spirit to dwell inside me to lead me and guide me.

Jesus says: Concerning the Holy Spirit

John 14:26  But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in MY name, HE shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

John 16:13  Howbeit when HE, the Spirit of truth, is come, HE will guide you into all truth: for HE shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever HE shall hear, that shall HE speak: and HE will shew you things to come.

But even though I was given the Holy Spirit, I still had to learn to hear which spirit was of God for we have thoughts and ideas coming by our own flesh, thoughts from devils, and thoughts and ideas from God, and often all three speak things to our minds that seem “good”.

Thus the apostle John said:

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God:  I Jn. 4:1

We can pray, asking God to confirm which thought is from the Spirit of God.

We can pray, asking God for wisdom.

James 1:5 … If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

We overcome through God … not through our own ideas.

Our flesh is greatly lifted up in pride when we do something based on our own wisdom.

But when we ask God for HIS wisdom and receive HIS direction, how can we take fleshly pride for the idea was not from ourselves but from God …

Thus we keep our flesh under submission to God by seeking God’s wisdom and by choosing God’s wisdom.

The apostle Paul said …

I Cor. 9:24Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.  25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. 26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: 27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
