Ehau

(Comments by Joan Boney)

Before the kings of Israel, there were judges, raised up by God to deliver the people of God who did evil in the sight of God.  As long as that judge, appointed by God, ruled, the people were kept in place but after that judge died, the people rose up to do evil again until God raised up another judge to be deliverer.

In the NT, judges over doctrine are apostles, appointed to that ministry office.  (See:  Acts 15)

After Jesus arose, HE gave gifts to the church.  Eph. 4 ... He gave some apostles, some prophets, some evangelists and some pastors and teachers for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.

The apostle Paul said ... Acts 20:29-30 ... For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

Judges 2

1-4   And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break MY covenant with you.

And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed MY voice: why have ye done this?

Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.

And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

11-19   And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim:

And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the LORD to anger.

And they forsook the LORD, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.

And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and HE delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and HE sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.

Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had said, and as the LORD had sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.

Nevertheless the LORD raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.

And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so.

And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.

And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.

Judges 3

15-31   So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.

But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.

And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.

And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.

But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king:

who said, Keep silence.

And all that stood by him went out from him.

And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.

And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly: And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.

Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.

When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.

And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.

And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.

And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.

And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.

And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.

So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years. (80 years rest)

And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.

And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars

Why do we who are of God want to hear what the inhabitants of this land say?  Why would we want to know what they think?  They are flesh and not spirit.  They are not God.  Why would we care or even want to hear their words?

And those things they worship... their alters, their sayings which they love to say ... if we should hear such, surely we don't tolerate it without tearing them down.

I once went to lunch with a woman who loved to speak things of this world as if their saying were truth.  I would hear her speak, and then I would say:  "That's not in the Bible."  Showing her what I want to build on is that which God speaks.

If they speak to us, we tear down their alters.

Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.

If you keep silent when they speak, then God will not drive them out from you.  But if you speak the word of God from the Bible to them after they exalt themselves, they will leave you for the word will drive them out.

Why do you want to keep them around you?

To do so will have them as thorns in your sides.  And their gods of this world and of their own imaginations will be a snare to you ... a trap to keep you bottled up.

*   And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the LORD to anger.

Each of us who belong to God, being born again of HIS Spirit, remember what we were before we were born again.  Do you want to be that again?  The only way you can be with people not of the Spirit is to bow down to their gods, to their ideas.  Is that really what you want?  After having tasted the good things of God how can you want to return to the world?

And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and HE delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and HE sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.

One of the worst things I can think of is to have people of this world ruling over me.  Why would you want that?

And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.

Today we have the Holy Spirit in us unless we are reprobate.  If we insist on our own way and our preferences, God could turn us over to a reprobate mind, a mind without God's judgment, so we could go in our own way even though we once had the Holy Spirit.  Remember Saul?  He had the Holy Spirit but he would not obey God.  He would not do all that God said.  So God removed HIS Spirit from Saul and gave him an evil spirit to live in him.  The apostle Paul speaks to the NT church about those who are given over to a reprobate mind.  Romans 1 & II Cor. 13

Romans 1:18    For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

21-22   Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
28-32   And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Do you really have pleasure in the ungodly?  Or do they vex you when they speak and when you see what they do?  Why are you trying to walk with them?  Speak the word of God and free yourself.  Let them leave you.

II Cor. 13:5   Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
