One thing is needful, says Jesus ... What is that "one thing"?

Juliett Walton ... Member of body of Christ

Luke 10 38Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. 39And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. 40But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. 41And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 42But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

Martha was cumbered about much serving. She was careful and troubled about many things.

Cumber – One definition is to be burden in a troublesome way or hindered

Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His Word.

Martha wanted Mary to help her.  Jesus said that Martha had chosen the good part and it would not be taken from her.   Jesus said that one thing is needful

There are many things in life that seem important to us and we can be distracted from what is really necessary. Jesus is saying one thing is needful.

Needful –that which is needed or required.  Necessaryone definition is that which is essential to life. It is that which must be done to live.

We can choose to be like Martha or we can choose to be like Mary by going to God and hearing the Word He has for us.  Then we will know what to do and how to live.  Even when we do not feel we have a need, we can always sit at His feet and praise Him for what He has done.   When we have cares we can take them to God casting them upon Him.  We should always be available to hear Him.
